Islands Trust 2022 Community Stewardship Awards Nomination Now Open

 ʷəŋən, METULIYE/Victoria, B.C. – The Islands Trust 2022 Community Stewardship Awards program is now open for 
nominations. This is your opportunity to nominate an individual, Indigenous community member and/or an Indigenous 
society, an organization, school, classroom, community group, non-profit or business entity that supports the Islands Trust 
mandate to preserve and protect the Trust Area and its unique environment and amenities. 
 
“After pausing the program for a year due to competing priorities for staff resources in 2021, we are ready to bolster 
enthusiasm around the launch of this year’s award program,” said Islands Trust Council Chair Peter Luckham. “We are 
encouraging everyone to be an active participant in the nomination process. Each day we are reminded about the 
incredible work and dedication of islanders and community members who contribute in meaningful ways. This program 
honours their work on projects or initiatives that align with the preserve and protect mandate of the Islands Trust Area.”   
 
For approximately 20 years, the Islands Trust’s Community Stewardship Awards program has recognized remarkable and 
inspiring nominees and recipients who demonstrate leadership in preservation and protection of the Islands Trust Area. 
In reinstating the program in 2022, Islands Trust Council has updated the program to better align with Trust Council’s 
Reconciliation Declaration and amended the program to be offered once per elected term. Over the years, the submission 
of nominated projects addressed a range of important initiatives from land, water and marine conservation, agriculture, 
heritage protection (cultural and landscapes), climate action, and other public education initiatives.   
 
Nominations can be for a specific project or work carried out over a period of time with the criteria that it supports the 
Islands Trust Policy Statement’s goals. The initiative being worked on by the nominee(s), must be ongoing, or have been 
completed within the last two years. Stewardship awards will be given to at least two individuals and two organizations, 
providing there are sufficient qualifying entries to justify an award. Each nominator can submit two nominations per 
category. The deadline for nominations is April 18, 2022.    
 
Nomination forms, a list of past award recipients, and other resources are available on the Islands Trust’s stewardship 
awards website page or can be picked up at the Islands Trust offices. The 2022 award recipients will be announced at the 
Trust Council meeting in June. All awards will be formally presented in the recipients’ own communities in the fall. For
