Project Description:  The Saturna Scribbler is a monthly newsletter dedicated to 
recording local events, activities, history, and news. This publication has been in print 
for many years, and has been run and written by a range of community members and 
groups. This paper is so highly valued by islanders that it is in the process of being 
archived by the local library. The Scribbler currently boasts a staff of 15 volunteers, 
many of whom have been involved with the publication for over a decade. This team of 
volunteers is not only providing a community service, but through their efforts, also 
make a dedicated and ongoing contribution to the Saturna Island community.

Nominee:  Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia, B.C.

Project Description:  Since 1997 the Land Trust Alliance of British Columbia has 
supported the work of Trust Area conservancies. The Alliance has developed 
educational programs and resources that help local conservancies to steward, protect, 
and restore the natural environment of the islands. Their publications are extensive, 
ranging from the award winning ‘Islands in the Salish Sea Atlas’ to a series of 
conservation information kits and brochures for real estate agents, developers, and the 
general public.  The Land Trust Alliance also provides island conservancies with 
financial services, including group insurance programs and small grants. Individually, 
island groups would not have had the time or in some instances, the resources, to 
produce the high quality of work that the Land Trust Alliance has been able to provide.

Project Description:  The Pender Islands Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) was 
established in 1996, with a mandate of assisting animals in need and educating the 
public about the need for protecting animals. With over 15 volunteers, and the support 
of cash donations from the community, PAWS has undertaken numerous activities and 
programs, including: the development of a pet food ‘Food Bank’; an annual PAWS 
Education Day; animal placement services; dog-sitting services during the Fall Fair; 
working with boaters to ensure safe passage
