On  behalf  of  the  Gabriola Island Local  Trust  Committee  (LTC),  thank  you  for  attending  our  Local  Trust 
Committee meeting on June 17
th

As Chair of the Gabriola Island LTC and pursuant to a motion passed at the June 17, 2021 meeting, I am 
pleased  to  provide  you  with  this  letter  of  support  for  the  landing  of  the  Connected  Coast  high  speed 
internet cable on Gabriola Island.  This support is provided on the understanding and condition that the 
concurrence of the Snuneymuxw First Nation is obtained regarding the location and methodology of the 
“landing”.  The foreshore of Gabriola is an area subject to the treaty and territorial rights and title of the 
Snuneymuxw  First  Nations  and  is  an  area  which  contains  many  cultural  and  harvesting  areas  for  the 
Snuneymuxw and other Coast Salish Peoples, its protection and preservation is critical. 
During our conversation at the LTC meeting, it was identified that the south bound leg of the Connected 
Coast cable will pass immediately adjacent to both Mudge and De Courcy Islands.  On behalf of the LTC, I 
urge you to consider providing an “off ramp” and landing to these two islands that have historically had 
challenges with connectivity to the internet as well as challenges with cell service.  A high speed link could 
go  some  way  to  assisting  with  this  issue.  We  can  provide  more  information  regarding  the  islands  if 
needed, including  community  contacts.   I  recognize  that  connections  to  those  islands  are  not  in  your 
current plans but also understand those plans may have some flexibility.
