I am writing to thank you for meeting with us on March 18, 2021, to discuss Islands Trust Council’s 
request that the Province enhance the Island Trust’s jurisdiction over tree-cutting bylaws. I appreciate 
that you took the time and included your staff to meet with us. The opportunity to have a wide-ranging 
discussion with you and your staff regarding forest management, private logging, and tree-cutting in the 
Islands Trust Area allowed us to express our concerns and interests. We appreciate your willingness to 
continue discussions about this topic and to considering solutions to this historic issue for the Islands 
Trust Area. I note that you may have concerns about this request in consideration of other regional 
districts interests on this topic. Given that the Islands Trust Area is a special and unique place in the 
province, with a unique governance structure and mandate under the Islands Trust Act, I ask that some 
special consideration might be given to enable Islands Trust to meet the expectations of all British 
Columbians with respect to delivering on its preserve and protect mandate, specifically, with protecting 
forests, tree cover, and their associated habitats.  
 
I would like to thank you for your kind words about Islands Trusts reconciliation initiatives and the 
collaboration and engagement that Islands Trust is undertaking with First Nations within the Islands 
Trust Area.  As mentioned in our discussion, I have enclosed Islands Trust Reconciliation Report, which 
provides an overview of the work undertaken in the Islands Trust Reconciliation Action Plan 2018-2022, 
and the discussion paper presented to Trust Council on the amendment process related to the Islands 
Trust Policy Statement.  There are two sections within the discussion paper that focus on reconciliation 
and First Nations engagement related to the Policy Statement amendments.  
 
I am pleased that discussions will continue at the staff-to-staff level on the topics we raised and I look 
forward to discussing this with you again in the future.
