SUMMARY OF REGULATIONS: SOIL REMOVAL AND/OR DEPOSIT ON SALT SPRING ISLAND 
 
Before registering your plans for the soil removal or deposit of more than 40 cubic metres of material, or 
applying for a permit to remove or deposit over 100 cubic metres of material, you will need to have the 
following information: 
 
 Knowledge of any riparian areas on the property, including where the natural boundary of the 
shore lies as well as any creeks, ponds, or wetlands that may exist. 
 
 Knowledge of whether the property is within a Development Permit Area (DPA) and whether a 
development permit is needed for the work proposed.

 Knowledge of any rights-of-way, easements, permits, or covenants that may be registered 
against the title of the property. You should be familiar with the content of these documents and 
any restrictions they may impose on how soil can be removed or deposited on the property.    
 Property owners may have this information on file. 
 Information on Development Permits can be accessed through the Islands Trust. 
 A title certificate and copies of covenants, rights-of-way, and easements can be accessed through 
the Government Agent Office.
