The Committee passed a motion supporting the request by the Fircom/Sunset Owners Society to change the name of the Halkett Bay Dock to differentiate it from the Halkett Bay Marine Provincial Park Dock. During the July 22 meeting Trustee Stamford noted other instances of confusion where people travelling to Gambier Island had been unaware that the commonly referenced “Fircom” Dock was actually the SCRD Halkett Bay Dock. The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee also recommended that the Sunshine Coast Regional District reach out to the Sḵwx ̱ wú7mesh Uxwumixw (Squamish Nation) to seek suggestions for an alternative culturally appropriate name for this facility. We look forward to seeing how this community-led initiative to support effective emergency response to Gambier Islanders moves forward.
