Our local trust area is comprised of Gambier and Keats Islands as well as all the islands in the Howe Sound/Atl’ka7tsem area (apart from Bowen Island Municipality) and islands along the Sunshine Coast as far as Pender Harbour. The Gambier Island Local Trust Committee is part of the Islands Trust; a federation of locally elected government bodies representing 26,000 residents and approximately 10,000 non-resident property owners in the Salish Sea area. The Islands Trust Area is located within Coast Salish territory and is home to over 28,000 Coast Salish Peoples who have called this place home since time immemorial. The Islands Trust mandate is to preserve and protect the unique environment and amenities of the Islands Trust Area through planning and regulating land use, development management, education, cooperation with First Nations and other agencies, and land conservation. Through the provincial Islands Trust Act, we also have zoning authority in the marine area surrounding the islands and are strong advocates of local marine issues. This term, the Gambier Island Local Trust Committee is represented by myself, Sue Ellen Fast, as Chair from Bowen Island; Kate-Louise Stamford, Trustee from Gambier Island, and Dan Rogers, Trustee from Keats Island The Gambier Island local trustees work closely with the xʷməθkʷəy ̓ əm, Skwxwú7mesh, and Tsleil- Waututh nations, as well as the municipal and regional governments in the West Vancouver-Sunshine Coast-Sea to Sky region. We also are active participants with non-governmental groups and initiatives that are supportive of the Trust mandate such as the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative and Ocean Wise. You may remember meeting with Trustee Stamford on October 8th in Gibsons prior to your election. Trustee Stamford outlined the concerns of the community on the South West Peninsula on Gambier Island about the potential sale or closure of their dock in New Brighton. This problem continues to be a challenging issue to resolve as there are a number of complexities around jurisdiction and long-term Page 2 Bowen Denman Hornby Gabriola Galiano Gambier Lasqueti Mayne North Pender Salt Spring Saturna South Pender Thetis funding to ensure that this facility stays open for public a
