BOWEN ISLAND AND SEA LEVEL RISE
Special workshop to be held on March 30

Bowen Island—Islands Trust and Bowen Island Municipality announce a special community workshop exploring the
implications of sea level rise and its impact on Bowen Island.

Sea level rise is of growing concern for coastal communities. The B.C. Government projects that sea level will rise by
0.5m by 2050 and 1m by 2100. With 80% of the province—about 3,500,000 people—living within 5 km of the coast. In
the light of this dramatic change, what can individuals do to prepare and adapt for sea level rise in the near future?

The goal of the workshop, which will take place on March 30
th
at 10:00 am at the Municipal Hall, is to start a discussion
and help the Bowen Island community begin to plan for climate change adaptation, taking on board the specific
contexts coastal communities with limited resources face. Through interactive exercises, the workshop will engage the
local government and the community in planning for sea level rise and, in turn, help increase resiliency.

The workshop will be of interest to anyone worried about the impacts of climate change, especially waterfront owners
and other concerned community members, including building and landscaping professionals and contractors.

Workshop proceedings will be documented and circulated to participants and also posted on the Bowen Island
Municipality and Islands Trust website. There will be resources available on the day along with a list of potential
funding sources.

Presented by Living Oceans Society, the workshop is a part of the Climate Conversations series offered by the Bowen
Island Municipality and is sponsored by Islands Trust.
