Attached is a copy of an Islands Trust report “Exploring Food Security in the Islands Trust Area”. The report provides 
information about food security and food systems and serves as a foundation for further work on local policies and actions 
to support food security. It contains an overview of global, national and provincial food systems and statistics.  It focuses on 
local issues and opportunities through ten food security related policy themes: land, housing, water, wild foods/lands, 
processing, distribution, access, education, community agriculture and water management. 
 
Food security is currently part of the Islands Trust Council’s Strategic Plan. Following receipt of the food security report in 
December 2010, Trust Council resolved to continue to include and strengthen food security in the Strategic Plan. 
Recognizing that the report will be of interest to other agencies and communities, Islands Trust Council asked staff to 
provide copies of the report to the Islands Trust Fund Board, local trust committees and Bowen Island Municipality for 
consideration of the recommendations and to provincial agencies, regional districts, First Nations, interest groups and the 
general public for their information. 
 
Over the following months, Trust Council will continue to undertake further work on food security and explore ways to 
implement some of the recommendations contained in the report. For example, Trust Council has suggested that the 
Islands Trust Fund Board explore the feasibility of establishing a farm land trust, and has asked Islands Trust staff to 
undertake further research and report back with recommendations for additional work.  The Islands Trust will also consider 
food security in any reviews of policy and bylaws.  
 
The Islands Trust Council is a federation of independent local governments that represents some 25,000 people living 
within the Islands Trust Area.  The Islands Trust is responsible for preserving and protecting the unique environment of the 
Islands Trust Area through planning and regulating land use, development management, education, cooperation with other 
agencies, and land conservation.  The area covers the islands and waters between the British Columbia mainland and 
southern Vancouver Island.  It includes 13 major and more than 450 smaller islands covering 5200 square kilometres.
