Unfortunately, I did not receive the letter until May 7 because it was not sent to a working email address. I am grateful that our respective staff have worked together to ensure contact information is up to date. I appreciate that this is a challenging time for all levels of government. It is also extremely challenging for the Islands Trust, and has been for a long time, even before our first request of your government for a review of our mandate, governance and structure in 2022. While I respect your decision not to proceed with a review during this Trust Council term, I reiterate my predecessor’s request for a meeting with you as the Minister Responsible for the Islands Trust. Even if a review will not be initiated, there are important aspects of the context in which the Islands Trust works that would be valuable for us to discuss. I find it concerning that you met with and discussed the Islands Trust with MLA Botterell before he had met with any elected member of Trust Council to learn himself about our current work and priorities. MLA Botterell does not, of course, represent the Islands Trust or the entirety of the Trust Area. Therefore, I would respectfully suggest that it is in both of our interests as democratically elected leaders with direct accountability for the Islands Trust to instead ensure you have a current and accurate understanding of the Islands Trust’s priorities, challenges and goals. I make myself available to meet at your convenience either virtually or in person.
