Re: Islands Trust Council Urges Federal and Provincial Governments to Support the Global Initiative 
for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty 
 
I am writing to inform you that on June 23, 2022, Islands Trust Council joined local governments 
around the world in endorsing the global initiative for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. This 
commendable initiative aims to address the current climate emergency by eliminating fossil fuel 
exploration and expansion, phasing out existing production, and accelerating equitable transition 
plans. The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty has now been endorsed by over 60 cities and sub-
national governments, over 150,000 individuals, and over 1,300 organizations around the world. 
 
Acknowledging the roles that provincial and federal leaders must play in curbing fossil fuel 
expansion, Islands Trust Council urges the Government of Canada and the Government of British 
Columbia to support the global initiative for a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty at the provincial 
and federal levels, thereby demonstrating Canada’s leadership in the transition to a cleaner, safer, 
more resilient world. 
 
The Islands Trust Area is located in Coast Salish Territory, between the British Columbia mainland and 
southern Vancouver Island, and encompasses more than 450 small islands in the Salish Sea. Covering 
5,200 square kilometres, the region is home to biodiverse and sensitive ecosystems, the highest 
density of species at risk in Canada, and many culturally significant areas for First Nations and 
Indigenous Peoples. Small island communities and ecosystems are highly vulnerable to the increasing 
climate impacts of hotter/drier summers, wildfire risks, droughts, rising sea levels, ocean 
acidification, shoreline erosion, and storm surge flooding, etc., particularly where there are existing 
socioeconomic and health related inequities. In 2019, Islands Trust Council formally declared a 
Climate Emergency and committed to taking urgent and equitable climate action.
