The Salt Spring Community Economic Development Commission and the Salt Spring 
Island Chamber of Commerce are requesting a delegation to the December 1, 2020 
Island's Trust Council Meeting. While Ganges Village Area PLanning is related to only 
one LTC – Salt Spring, the budget necessary to do this work must be approved by the 
Trust Council.

SSI-CEDC –SSI Chamber Delegation in 
Support of Funding for a
Ganges Village Area Plan
December 2020
OVERVIEW
A integrated and comprehensive Ganges Village Area plan will 
help the Islands Trust maintain a balance between preserve, and 
protect while ensuring ongoing rural economic and social well-
being in the context of the Trust Area.
This plan will benefit the community by providing:
1.A consistent point of reference against which to make 
decisions
2.The ability to make more informed decisions
3.More predictability regarding budgeting and planning
4.Potential to optimize resource use
5.Means to preserve community character
6.Capacity to produce sustainable economic development 
OVERVIEW
•There are many examples of villages, towns and cities that 
have demonstrated the value in town planning.  
•As a community, we need to get ahead of our challenges, seek 
opportunities and manage risks.
•By engaging in a deep and meaningful assessment of the 
current situation in the Village of Ganges, and a thorough and 
robust planning process that reaches out to the island’s 
citizens, energizes the LTC planning department and mobilizes 
partners, the island could collectively realize a vision.  
Community Consultation
•Community consultation is the foundation for 
achieving a sound plan that reflects the values of the 
community across all demographics
•Thorough community consultation educates, informs 
and insures buy-in
•Recommend a variety of engagement tools to obtain 
a full and transparent recommendations

•Our community faces critical challenges for 
sustaining the culture of Ganges which is the core of 
our unique rural community 
•Central to the sustainability of the Ganges village is 
the ability to create a livable community for residents 
now and into the future
•Climate change mitigation and housing management 
are essential to realizing a sustainable Ganges Village 
Area Plan
