Dear Captain Grewal:

Re: Dumping of Holding Tanks within Islands Trust Area

I am writing with a request that BC Ferries remind its subcontractors to adhere to Transport Canada
regulations with respect to sewage dumping. We’ve heard concerns that there may be the possibility
of dumping of sewage closer than three nautical miles from land. The Islands Trust Council
understands that BC Ferries adheres to Transport Canada regulations with respect to sewage dumping.
These regulations ban the discharge of untreated sewage into all Canadian inland waters and Canadian
coastal waters within three nautical miles of land (ships less than 400 tons) and 12 miles of land (ships
larger than 400 tons).

I understand that our staff has already been in contact via e-mail and have been assured that best
practices will be followed and that crew training and monitoring will be reviewed. We appreciate the
review of this matter since the protection of our inland waters and the sensitive ecosystems and
habitats within the Islands Trust Area are key concerns for the Islands Trust.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,
