Subject: Request from the Gabriola Land and Trails Trust 
Hi Melanie and Heather, 
Hope you two are enjoying this beautiful weather with your families, "Now I remember why I live here". 
I am writing with my Gabriola Land and Trails Trust (GaLTT) hat on. I met Fiona MacRaild recently at an 
Islands Trust Fund Regional Conservation Plan workshop in Nanaimo. What a powerhouse and excellent 
educator she is. 
 
As a land-based organization on Gabriola, GaLTT is wanting to initiate a respectful relationship with members 
of the Snneymuxw First Nation. From Fiona's talk it is clear that strengthening relations with First Nations in 
the Islands Trust Area is a high priority for the Islands Trust. 
 
A Snneymuxw elder, Juanita ? (I did not get her last name) opened the workshop with drumming and a prayer. 
She is in her 80s and Fiona said she has never been on any of the Gulf Islands. I spoke to Fiona after her talk 
and we thought it would be a good initiative to hold a low-key gathering on Gabriola (perhaps sometime later in 
the summer - August?), invite a few members of the Snneymuxw FN to come over, meet some GaLTT board 
members, perhaps yourselves or someone else representing the Islands Trust, visit one or more sites on 
Gabriola, share some food. Elder Cedar Nature Reserve is one possible spot to visit as the Snneymuxw First 
Nation were involved in its creation.  
 
I have spoken to a board member from the Gabriola Museum and they may be interested in co-hosting such an 
event. We thought there might be, over time, some potential for initiating work on traditional place names on 
Gabriola. 
 
Fiona suggested that she could help coordinate an event like this. She suggested I contact Ann Kjerulf. I did that 
and Ann suggested it would need to go to the Local Trust Committee for discussion as Fiona cannot work 
directly with community groups. I am writing you as I think Fiona's help in coordinating an event would be a 
huge help and a great benefit to all of us on Gabriola. 
I am off-island May 30th to June 6th and I gather the next Local Trust Committee meeting is June 8th. 
  
I would appreciate your considering this request and letting me know if there is anything else I need to do at this 
time to have the idea considered.
