Islands 2050 engagement results and next steps

 ʷəŋən, METULIYE/Victoria, B.C. – At the June 2022 Trust Council meeting, ISL Engineering shared the results from the 
third phase of engagement for the Islands 2050 Policy Statement Amendment, along with a high-level overview of the 
engagement process. Trust Council was also presented with engagement summary reports from a second phase of early 
and meaningful engagement with First Nations and a first phase of agency referrals. 
  
Between February and April 2022, over 2,000 participants shared their thoughts on proposed draft changes to the Islands 
Trust Policy Statement through a wide range of online and in-person engagement activities across the Islands Trust Area. 
This included 24 in-person community events, 3 virtual community events, a number of focus groups, and an 
online/paper survey. The 93-page Engagement Summary Report summarizes the feedback and input received from 
members of the public, including input captured in almost 1,300 completed surveys.  
  
“A heartfelt thank you to everyone who participated in the recent phases of Islands 2050 engagement on the draft new 
Islands Trust Policy Statement,” said Peter Luckham, Trust Council Chair. “We had some great conversations, heard a 
diverse range of views, and learned a great deal from community members across the Trust Area, and others who care 
deeply about the preservation and protection of this special region. Now it’s time for Trust Council to consider and 
balance the feedback we received, and make decisions together as a Council regarding next steps for the project.” 
  
During the June 2022 meeting, Trust Council discussed and responded to the engagement summary reports by passing 
several resolutions for amendments to the draft new Policy Statement and directing Trust Programs Committee to 
develop further recommendations for consideration by Executive Committee and Trust Council in September 2022.  
Trust Council is grateful to everyone who took the time to participate in the third phase of engagement for the Islands 
2050 Policy Statement Amendment Project. All three engagement summary reports have been posted to the Islands 2050 
webpage, along with other helpful fact sheets and resources about the project.
