WELCOME to HORNBY Island!
Hornby Island Local Trust Committee 
Hornby Island is a very special place, held dear by residents and visitors alike.  By their 
nature, islands tend to be more fragile than areas on the mainland. Extra care is often 
required  to  keep  them  safe.  While  tourism  is  important  to  our  local  economy  it  can  
also bring extra pressures such as increased traffic and use of services. While here, we 
ask you to “live like a local” and observe the following guidelines that our community 
uses to ensure a positive future for Hornby Island.  
First Nations’ Presence and Heritage:
Both Denman Island and Hornby Island are within the traditional territory of the K’ómoks First 
Nation (https://www.komoks.ca/maps)  and  are  important  places  historically  and  presently  for  
them.  Sites  of  First  Nations’  cultural  activity  have  been  documented  by  the  B.C.  Archaeology  
Branch, and there are measures to protect K’ómoks First Nation heritage sites. Please be respectful 
of and sensitive to the fact that there are First Nations artifacts on this island. 
Maintaining Residential Character: 
Vacation Home Rentals are permitted on Hornby Island in the context of maintaining the residential 
character of neighbourhoods. This gives visitors the opportunity to experience community living 
while they are here, and also gives assurance to residents that their neighbourhood character will 
not  be  negatively  impacted.  Please  observe  the  legal  occupancy  limits  for  this  house,  and  enjoy  
being in a home away from home.
Sensitive Ecosystems: 
The wonderful natural areas that make Hornby Island such a special place also include sensitive 
ecosystems that contain rare plant communities and habitat. Please help us protect this natural 
heritage by staying on trails in sensitive areas and not removing or damaging vegetation.
Water Usage: 
For the accommodation you’re staying at, water will be supplied by a well and/or cistern on the 
property. Fresh, potable water is a scarce resource on an island and water use is a real concern on 
Hornby.  Well usage on one property can affect the amount of water in other areas, so please help 
us practice water conservation by avoiding long showers, doing a lot of laundry, or letting faucets/
taps run unnecessarily. It is advisable to leave a gap between heavy uses of water (e.g. laundry, 
showers) to give the well adequate time to recover.
Areas of Particular Concern:
Noise: 
Please be considerate of the fact that you are in a residential area, where local residents and other 
visitors also enjoy the peace, quiet, rest, and comforts of rural Hornby living. Please be respectful 
of  your/our  neighbours’  peace  and  quiet.    Excessive  noise  is  subject  to  fines  ranging  from  $500  
to $10,000. If you have a noise concern, please contact the Comox Valley Regional District Bylaw 
Compliance Department directly at 250-334-6000.
