[0:02:41] Voice 2: Speaker Series. My name is Wendy Tyrrell, and I work as the Species at Risk Program Coordinator
[0:02:46] Voice 2: for the Islands Trust Conservancy. And I'm excited today to host the webinar with our guest speaker,
[0:02:52] Voice 2: Katrina Stipek, who is representing the BC Conservation Data Center
[0:02:57] Voice 2: with a presentation on the CDC 101 providing information about biodiversity in BC.
[0:03:03] Voice 2: So I'm really grateful to Katrina for presenting for us today and for each of you for taking the
[0:03:08] Voice 2: time to join us in learning more about species at risk in our region. I'd like to start our
[0:03:14] Voice 2: meeting off with the First Nations land and water acknowledgement and if you're inspired to do so
[0:03:19] Voice 2: please feel free to add your own personal acknowledgement in the chat room. So with
[0:03:29] Voice 2: respect I would like to acknowledge that we're gathered here from our homes and workplaces
[0:03:34] Voice 2: across the lands and waters of the Coast Salish peoples

[0:03:42] Voice 2: and their longstanding relationship of respect, stewardship,
[0:03:47] Voice 2: and reciprocity with plants, animals, land, water, each other,

[0:03:55] Voice 2: and reminded that we can play a positive role
[0:03:59] Voice 2: in restoring these cultural, spiritual connections to the land
[0:04:04] Voice 2: and for people that we work with by protecting, restoring, and learning more about the land
[0:04:10] Voice 2: itself. And I think this is key to moving forward in a good way. Thanks for giving space for
[0:04:17] Voice 2: acknowledging these impacts of colonialization past and current. And I'd like to now go over
[0:04:24] Voice 2: a quick agenda. First, we're going to do some housekeeping notes. And then I will do a brief
[0:04:31] Voice 2: introduction into the Islands Trust Conservancy and the SARP program. I will then do presentation
[0:04:37] Voice 2: intro and Katrina will take over from there on her presentation. After the presentation we'll have a

[0:06:02] Voice 2: in a series of webinars that we are hosting that focus on species and ecosystems at risk in our
[0:06:08] Voice 2: region. And over the past 31 years, together with local conservancies, landholders, community members
[0:06:14] Voice 2: and others, the ITC or Alliance Trust Conservancy has helped to protect special places here in the
[0:06:21] Voice 2: islands by encouraging undertaking and assisting in voluntary conservation initiatives we also now
[0:06:27] Voice 2: have a species at risk program that was launched in the summer of 2020 and this our program along
[0:06:33] Voice 2: with work that we're doing with species at risk like the speaker series here SAR surveys and
[0:06:38] Voice 2: habitat enhancement these are all made possible by the funding that we were awarded to us by
[0:06:43] Voice 2: Environment and Climate Change Canada through their priority places funding stream so we're
[0:06:50] Voice 2: really happy to announce that we did get extended for an additional three years of funding. So that's
[0:06:56] Voice 2: exciting. If you want to learn more about the conservancy and our SAR program, you can check
[0:07:01] Voice 2: out the website. I've put a link there. So with that, I'd like to get started and introduce you
[0:07:07] Voice 2: to Katrina. So I'm really happy that Katrina was able to speak with us today as one of the high
[0:07:14] Voice 2: priorities that came out for learning when we did a feedback survey in last year during a SAR workshop
[0:07:21] Voice 2: was that collecting, submitting and analyzing data and understanding and having access to data is key
[0:07:28] Voice 2: to the current status and knowing how to manage this species at risk in our region. So Katrina
[0:07:34] Voice 2: is coming to us from the BC Conservation Data Centre with the Ministry of Water, Land and
[0:07:39] Voice 2: resource stewardship. She completed her BS bachelor of science degree in geography from
[0:07:46] Voice 2: the University of Victoria, has worked with non-profit organizations, regional and federal
[0:07:50] Voice 2: governments before joining the CDC's management unit in 2005. She's been there quite a long time.
[0:07:56] Voice 2: And as the species and ecosystems risk information specialist she notes that she has a passion for
[0:08:02] Voice 2: client service and is really happy to help with any of your CDC data needs. So now Katrina I'm

[0:10:00] Voice 6: that the CDC does carry out its work
[0:10:03] Voice 6: on traditional territories of many many Indigenous nations throughout BC.
[0:10:09] Voice 6: I personally am presenting today from my home in the unceded territories of the WSÁNEĆ peoples
[0:10:16] Voice 6: and here in Brentwood Bay close to the Sartlip community and I'm so very grateful to be here.
[0:10:23] Voice 6: Part of my own interest took me to learning more about the local park that I go to very often
[0:10:29] Voice 6: and to keep my mind and body healthy and happy.
[0:10:33] Voice 6: And that's what I've been practicing
[0:10:35] Voice 6: is how to pronounce it with this traditional name,
[0:10:40] Voice 6: Clayvellnook.
[0:10:41] Voice 6: I think that I'm doing it not too badly.
[0:10:44] Voice 6: Clayvellnook, Dean Park.
[0:10:46] Voice 6: And I learned that the meaning of this Senchothan word
[0:10:51] Voice 6: is a place of refuge or healing.
[0:10:53] Voice 6: And there's a really interesting story behind that name,
[0:10:57] Voice 6: significant to the WSANIC nation.
[0:10:58] Voice 6: vaccination and I encourage you to look that up if it's of interest to you but regardless I can
[0:11:03] Voice 6: certainly agree that Claywell Nook is a healing place for me so thank you and welcome oh and of
[0:11:10] Voice 6: course the shot of my dog Earl and me enjoying Claywell Nook. So on to what we're here for today
[0:11:19] Voice 6: to learn about things I'll be covering today the background of the CDC our core functions
[0:11:26] Voice 6: why we do what we do. We'll talk about those core functions of BC conservation status ranks,
[0:11:32] Voice 6: element occurrences, other CDC spatial products that are in the in the works right now. We'll
[0:11:40] Voice 6: talk about data submissions and of course how you can access the data that we can provide to you.
[0:11:46] Voice 6: I will have a quick slides of a tool overview in case you can't stick around for the demos.
[0:11:52] Voice 6: After that will be the questions and answers, and then I'll launch into actually showing you live demos of how those tools work so that you can use them in for your interest.
[0:12:05] Voice 6: So, excuse me.
[0:12:09] Voice 6: The CDC is housed in the BC government.
[0:12:13] Voice 6: Currently within the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship.
[0:12:17] Voice 6: We've been bounced around a bit but that's where we are right now in Walrus in the knowledge management branch.
[0:12:23] Voice 6: branch. We have a bit of an interesting history though at the CDC. We were officially created
[0:12:28] Voice 6: in 1990. There was an information gap, realization that before you can conserve and protect what
[0:12:36] Voice 6: we have in the province, we first need to know what there is in the province and subsequently
[0:12:41] Voice 6: how those plants and animals are doing. The result of that recognition was an agreement
[0:12:47] Voice 6: between the BC government, Ministry of Environment at the time, I believe, and a number of non-profit
[0:12:54] Voice 6: organizations. Interestingly, which I didn't even know, the Nature Conservancy of Canada
[0:13:02] Voice 6: had the supervising role at the start of the program, and BC government was to kind of provide
[0:13:08] Voice 6: the space for that. As time has gone on now, BC government has taken over that full responsibility
[0:13:14] Voice 6: many years ago. But it's important to point out that we are also unique in that the BC
[0:13:21] Voice 6: Conservation Data Centre is purposely kept arm's length from policy and management in the
[0:13:27] Voice 6: government. It makes our role a bit very defined and easier in many respects. Our job is to provide
[0:13:36] Voice 6: foundational data and information based on science to allow others, both internal and external to
[0:13:42] Voice 6: government make informed decisions that affect conservation and biodiversity. And a very
[0:13:50] Voice 6: significant part of our work and identity at the CDC is our membership and close ties with Nature
[0:13:57] Voice 6: Serve and Nature Serve Canada. They're a global and a national non-profit organization. Each province
[0:14:04] Voice 6: and territory and state has an equivalent conservation data center that's a member of
[0:14:10] Voice 6: the NatureServe network and NatureServe Canada of course has representation across Canada
[0:14:18] Voice 6: including associate membership from Parks Canada, Environment and Climate Change Canada, Fisheries
[0:14:24] Voice 6: and Oceans Canada and the Nature Conservancy of Canada and NatureServe Canada facilitates
[0:14:31] Voice 6: national scale projects, they provide like a Canadian voice to the NatureServe network
[0:14:36] Voice 6: network and help maintain those strong partnerships between the individual CDCs with each other
[0:14:42] Voice 6: and the federal organizations as well.
[0:14:46] Voice 6: So the Nature Survey Network has over 60 CDC equivalent programs in total.
[0:14:53] Voice 6: Together we provide science-based data to support conservation and we use a common method
[0:15:00] Voice 6: for how we assess and how we map species and ecological communities at risk across this
[0:15:06] Voice 6: North American area. We use a cloud-based platform and that allows us to efficiently integrate and
[0:15:13] Voice 6: share data between those organizations. So we can send data to the global cloud environment
[0:15:19] Voice 6: and we can grab that global data and incorporate it into our own database as well. And NatureServe
[0:15:27] Voice 6: can integrate all that spatial and tabular data from the different CDC programs and manage that
[0:15:34] Voice 6: for national scale projects and global scale projects. So it's pretty neat. And the results
[0:15:41] Voice 6: of that collective knowledge and expertise really helps support us in our roles and also provides
[0:15:50] Voice 6: those opportunities for cross-border analysis and really cool projects like national scale,
[0:15:57] Voice 6: national range projects that we're doing across Canada and species distribution modeling. So it's
[0:16:04] Voice 6: It also helps clients who are doing massive projects like pipelines that cross those
[0:16:08] Voice 6: jurisdictional boundaries to be able to go to one spot and get the information from all the
[0:16:13] Voice 6: different programs. So it serves a lot of functions and it's a big part of who we are at the CDC.
[0:16:22] Voice 6: Who are we in BC? We are generally a staff of 10 to 12. We've had some significant retirements
[0:16:31] Voice 6: recently but that's also coming with some some exciting uh hiring so that's great uh we have a
[0:16:38] Voice 6: number of units we have the ecology units botany zoology data management which i am part of and
[0:16:48] Voice 6: we don't get a pretty picture we get a map but the reason we're here i guess well that's the
[0:16:55] Voice 6: data that results from all the fun stuff and then we have our acting manager um and i've given her
[0:17:01] Voice 6: I'm a hoary marmot not a species at risk but she loves rodents so there we go we're also you know
[0:17:08] Voice 6: there's 10 to 12 of us it's not a huge team but we are really lucky to have well lucky and we
[0:17:15] Voice 6: strategized by training up quite a number of contractors that are so important to our work
[0:17:22] Voice 6: because as we have funding and capacity we can pull on some of those those contractors that have
[0:17:29] Voice 6: have that that knowledge of our methods and can can help boost our data by providing more mapping
[0:17:37] Voice 6: and more of the things I'm going to talk about to come so we're really we benefit greatly from
[0:17:43] Voice 6: our contractors as well so I'm going to start with why we do what we do at the CDC now these
[0:17:51] Voice 6: look kind of random these photos they do all have something in common I my guess is you won't figure
[0:17:57] Voice 6: out what that thing is but if anyone's putting anything in the chat let me know. These are
[0:18:04] Voice 6: like googled image like image commons so don't get get sidetracked by the cute dog or anything
[0:18:10] Voice 6: they're kind of just like the result of looking for a park bench and a playground. I'll put you
[0:18:16] Voice 6: out of your misery. They're all reflecting a bit of bad news which is that at this time
[0:18:23] Voice 6: Nuttall's Quillwort, which is now yellow listed but was a species at risk considered at the time,
[0:18:29] Voice 6: unfortunately all of these things destroyed a location of Nuttall's Quillwort.
[0:18:37] Voice 6: So a park bench was put over one, we've got a commemorative plaque put over another,
[0:18:42] Voice 6: and a playground directly on top of of that plant. What I'm trying to say here is that
[0:18:49] Voice 6: this is what happens unintentionally when data either isn't available to everybody to use
[0:18:55] Voice 6: or it's not used to make those those decisions and be informed in those decisions
[0:18:59] Voice 6: so you know if they had known that there were these plans there plans would have probably changed
[0:19:07] Voice 6: been mitigated whatever that would look like but clearly it would have minimized some of this
[0:19:11] Voice 6: damage I don't think the park bench had to go there let's go on to a good news story so in
[0:19:18] Voice 6: this case, we had an introduced snail in Vesuvius, Salt Spring Island, and it required management
[0:19:26] Voice 6: control. They wanted to get rid of the snail. In reviewing the data, it was discovered that there
[0:19:33] Voice 6: was sharp-tailed snake in the area. The food source of sharp-tailed snake includes native snails,
[0:19:38] Voice 6: so the decision was made not to use a molluscicide treatment that would not only have eradicated the
[0:19:46] Voice 6: introduced snail, but also native snails that would have had a negative effect on the snakes
[0:19:51] Voice 6: in the area. So this is an example of why we want information out there and used. So what do we do?
[0:20:01] Voice 6: We have some core functions that the CDC, we have a lot of other projects on the go, but this is what
[0:20:06] Voice 6: we have to do. And this is our focus and our bread and butter. And I'll speak about each of these in
[0:20:13] Voice 6: bit more detail on the following slides as well. So the first is that we compile and report out
[0:20:19] Voice 6: what species in ecological communities, which we call elements, it's a NatureCert term,
[0:20:26] Voice 6: what exists in the province. Second, we determine the risk of extirpation by conducting a
[0:20:33] Voice 6: conservation status assessment to assign a conservation status rank. The rank reflects
[0:20:39] Voice 6: how at risk an element is of extirpation from BC.
[0:20:44] Voice 6: So I should say extirpation,
[0:20:46] Voice 6: meaning it's risk of being lost from the province.
[0:20:50] Voice 6: We then map the known locations
[0:20:53] Voice 6: or the locations of those elements determined to be at risk.
[0:20:56] Voice 6: And our standard mapping unit is an element occurrence
[0:20:59] Voice 6: or EO, which I'll be talking about.
[0:21:01] Voice 6: And it's again, a nature search standard map unit.
[0:21:05] Voice 6: We're also currently working on other data products
[0:21:08] Voice 6: that I'll talk about as well.
[0:21:10] Voice 6: And then finally, and super importantly, we make that data and information accessible through our
[0:21:15] Voice 6: online tools.
[0:21:20] Voice 3: So I talked about elements,
[0:21:22] Voice 6: and we use the term element apart from me getting tired
[0:21:27] Voice 6: of saying species and ecological communities every time. It's a recognized taxa of a plant,
[0:21:33] Voice 6: animal, or ecological community, which is the unit we track in the province. So in some cases,
[0:21:39] Voice 6: we're tracking a species in some in some places we're tracking subspecies or population or
[0:21:46] Voice 6: variety so it allows us to to to talk about elements that maybe represent different taxa
[0:21:53] Voice 6: in in the province the the list of what we um or the list of elements and that information about
[0:22:01] Voice 6: what occurs in bc is accessible through bc species and ecosystems explore so currently
[0:22:08] Voice 6: we report out vertebrates, invertebrates, vascular plants, bryophytes, lichens, and I'll just say
[0:22:16] Voice 6: that that is my drawing of the lichen that was chosen to be represented in our tool.
[0:22:20] Voice 6: When we Google for, you know, common images of lichens, they're apparently it's not that popular,
[0:22:27] Voice 6: so I had fun doing that. It's my claim to fame. Macro fungi and ecological communities.
[0:22:33] Voice 6: these um currently there's over how many elements reported through species and ecosystems explore
[0:22:41] Voice 6: oh i was going to say at the beginning i may put a few questions to you and but i haven't set up
[0:22:47] Voice 6: any polls my bad so uh can everyone use the thumbs up i'm going to say if you can find the reaction
[0:22:54] Voice 6: and thumbs up or something like that. Are there 5,000? Anybody? 10,000? 15,000? You're all just
[0:23:05] Voice 6: looking for a thumbs up, right? I'm just going to say there are 24,000 currently reported and
[0:23:11] Voice 6: exported out through BC Species and Ecosystems Explore, or I'll say BCSCE. Remember, there are
[0:23:19] Voice 6: 12 staff at the CDC. So we do have other sources of information we use to maintain these lists.
[0:23:26] Voice 6: and those come from NatureServe and Canada's National General Status Program. We add to this
[0:23:34] Voice 6: number regularly. Some of the groups coming this year I believe will be adding tardigrades and if
[0:23:42] Voice 6: you don't know what a tardigrade is I'm positive you're not alone but you should look it up because
[0:23:47] Voice 6: they're very very cute little microscopic things. Slime molds I believe might be added this year
[0:23:55] Voice 6: And I thought lights but I looked that up today and I think it's already going out in our, in our tools so if you're at the edge of your seat and wondering how many slime molds there are in the province.
[0:24:07] Voice 6: I recommend you reach out to my email, which I meant to also post in the chat my apologies.
[0:24:14] Voice 6: And every, every year we send out an announcement about what's new been added to the database and anything else interesting that we've done throughout the year.
[0:24:24] Voice 6: So yeah, stay tuned for that. So now we have the list. What occurs in the province? Now we need to
[0:24:32] Voice 6: look at those closely and determine what their conservation status rank is using this
[0:24:38] Voice 6: assessment. So the NatureServe method is used for conducting status assessments and it's available
[0:24:43] Voice 6: online. You can look it up. Some of the key features to that methodology is that it's
[0:24:48] Voice 6: It's transparent, it's repeatable, and it's science-based.
[0:24:53] Voice 6: The method by nature sort of applies to both species
[0:24:56] Voice 6: and ecological communities.
[0:24:58] Voice 6: And interestingly, it can be applied at any geographic scale.
[0:25:02] Voice 6: So you can use the same calculator included
[0:25:06] Voice 6: in this document or at the same website,
[0:25:11] Voice 6: and you can assess globally, nationally, provincially,
[0:25:15] Voice 6: or you can apply that even to your own community
[0:25:17] Voice 6: or backyard. So the calculator allows you to make use of what information you have available,
[0:25:25] Voice 6: even if it's limited, and it'll be reflected in the rank. So what kind of information goes into
[0:25:31] Voice 6: this assessment process? We look at rarity, threats, and trends. So under rarity, we consider
[0:25:42] Voice 6: at a range extent, so the continuous boundary within the province that encompasses all those
[0:25:48] Voice 6: occurrences, those known occurrences of a species or ecosystem at risk. We look at area of occupancy,
[0:25:55] Voice 6: so within that range, how much is actually known to be occupied by that element. We look at
[0:26:01] Voice 6: population size, the number of occurrences, and the number of occurrences with good viability or
[0:26:07] Voice 6: ecological integrity and what that means is that we place special value on those locations that are
[0:26:14] Voice 6: protected to some degree so something that's located or a location within a national park
[0:26:20] Voice 6: for example is likely to persist there and be more protected than one on the side of the highway
[0:26:26] Voice 6: so that's considered in ranking as well environmental specificity so for example
[0:26:32] Voice 6: For example, specialists that have very specific environmental requirements, that's considered.
[0:26:38] Voice 6: And then threats are assessed using an International Union for the Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, threats calculator.
[0:26:49] Voice 6: There's a lot of information that goes into a threats calculator.
[0:26:53] Voice 6: Dozens of different things are considered from transportation, human interaction.
[0:26:59] Voice 6: Oh gosh, there's just so many and all of that is rolled up to provide a threat score, which is then plugged into the conservation status calculators.
[0:27:12] Voice 6: A lot of experts sit around a table and determine what those threats are.
[0:27:16] Voice 6: So I should mention that this process of conservation status ranking does include,
[0:27:24] Voice 6: include, again, we have a limited staff and limited expertise in different things. So we
[0:27:32] Voice 6: will pull from experts across the province, within and outside of government to help
[0:27:37] Voice 6: inform this kind of process. We look at intrinsic vulnerabilities. So when a natural characteristic
[0:27:46] Voice 6: of that species makes it especially vulnerable to additional stress. So white sturgeon, for example,
[0:27:54] Voice 6: example, don't spawn until up to 34 years of age. So that's something that's just inherently
[0:28:00] Voice 6: vulnerable to that species. And we look at short and long term trends as well. And all of this
[0:28:07] Voice 6: information is factored in, it's weighted, there's an algorithm, which results in a rank
[0:28:13] Voice 6: out the other side. That rank is always reviewed by experts and accepted as the final assigned
[0:28:21] Voice 6: assigned status rank. The result being the BC conservation status rank represented by these numbers of one to five. So we've got the S here stands for sub national, which is
[0:28:38] Voice 6: that every conservation data center in each jurisdiction assigns its own sub national rank for an element. So in our case of course that's in BC.
[0:28:49] Voice 6: see. And that scoring from 1 to 5, we see there's S1 meaning critically imperiled, so the most at
[0:28:59] Voice 6: risk. We've got a southern maidenhair fern there representing that. We've got an imperiled white
[0:29:05] Voice 6: sturgeon, a canyon wren that has a rank of S3 question mark, which I'll talk about, which means
[0:29:12] Voice 6: it's vulnerable, and apparently secure western toad. And then we've got an Engelmann spruce there
[0:29:18] Voice 6: for an S5 or secure in the province. There are other ranks. We've got range ranks or uncertainty.
[0:29:27] Voice 6: So that question mark next to the S3 or the canyon rank is reflecting uncertainty around what the
[0:29:34] Voice 6: actual rank is. When the calculator or the conservation status assessment process takes
[0:29:41] Voice 6: into account data that we don't have, data that is uncertain, and can result in either these
[0:29:49] Voice 6: uncertainty ranks or range ranks. You could potentially have an S1, S3 for one element,
[0:29:55] Voice 6: meaning that it's somewhere within there and we don't know. There's more information on our website.
[0:30:00] Voice 6: that. There's also you'll find there's a number of other ranks but one of the ones you'll see
[0:30:07] Voice 6: quite a lot in our data is SNR and that means not yet ranked and that generally you'll find
[0:30:14] Voice 6: in some of the new groups of species that come online each year. So we know there are these
[0:30:21] Voice 6: lice occurring in BC but we don't either a have the expertise or the information at this time to
[0:30:29] Voice 6: to have assigned a conservation status rank to that yet.
[0:30:34] Voice 6: So those are our wishlists and the ones we want to get to,
[0:30:38] Voice 6: but have not gotten to yet.
[0:30:42] Voice 6: And in addition, the NatureServe will use the same process
[0:30:48] Voice 6: collecting data across North America
[0:30:51] Voice 6: to assign a G rank or global rank.
[0:30:53] Voice 6: And NatureServe Canada will do the same
[0:30:58] Voice 6: and produce a national or N rank.
[0:31:01] Voice 6: So each element, like a southern maidenhair fern, would have an S rank, an N rank, and a G rank.
[0:31:10] Voice 6: So a lot of our users are more familiar with the BC red, blue, and yellow lists.
[0:31:16] Voice 6: And I always like to clear up any confusion around this in that the red, blue, and yellow lists are simplified grouping of the conservation status ranks.
[0:31:27] Voice 6: They are not a regulatory list.
[0:31:30] Voice 6: they are to help um prioritize where uh what could be um what could be eligible for legal
[0:31:40] Voice 6: designation or to help prioritize conservation action but on their own they are not actually
[0:31:46] Voice 6: legal lists um they're really in an effort to simplify the the more information-rich
[0:31:53] Voice 6: conservation status ranks because it is you know seeing a whole bunch of numbers and range ranks
[0:31:59] Voice 6: and uncertainty, they can be complex to interpret and to search on. So we've grouped them into red,
[0:32:06] Voice 6: blue, and yellow. When we say in BC or the CDC species at risk, we generally are referring to
[0:32:15] Voice 6: those that are red or blue listed and currently there's around approximately 2,000 in BC that fall
[0:32:22] Voice 6: on
[0:32:23] Voice 3: the red or blue list at this time. So another
[0:32:30] Voice 6: of our core functions is to map the locations
[0:32:33] Voice 6: of those species or ecological communities that we determined to be at risk.
[0:32:38] Voice 6: One of our main product is the element occurrence, which again is a standard nature survey unit.
[0:32:44] Voice 6: And an element occurrence represents the following.
[0:32:47] Voice 6: Katrina?

[0:32:50] Voice 2: to interrupt. We did have a question you might want to address while you're on that previous slide.
[0:32:55] Voice 2: Amy asks, are they not considered regulatory because BC has no endangered species ask legislation? Is that the reason why they're not considered regulatory?
[0:33:07] Voice 6: I would say that they're not necessarily connected. The BC Red and Blue List came into effect many, many years ago, I think before legislation was being part of the current conversations.
[0:33:24] Voice 6: conversations so it really was not supposed to be related to legislation at the time
[0:33:31] Voice 6: having said that there are legislations that that pull from the BC red blue and yellow list so
[0:33:39] Voice 6: I think and and I wasn't here when it started and we actually still have conversations about
[0:33:44] Voice 6: the best way forward with our with our BC red and blue and yellow lists but what it was is that
[0:33:51] Voice 6: I believe that under the Force and Range Practices Act, for example, they looked to our red list to determine what might be eligible to be put under that legislation.
[0:34:03] Voice 6: So it was, I think, more of a way of prioritizing and simplifying to see what might be eligible to be, you know, after all of those other considerations are made, what may be put on a regulatory list.

[0:34:26] Voice 6: element occurrences and yes do feel free to interrupt me i don't
[0:34:29] Voice 6: yeah i'm happy to pause in case there's questions as well um so an element occurrence documents
[0:34:36] Voice 6: where a species or ecological community is or was present and i say or was because historical
[0:34:43] Voice 6: presence is still important we we do want to know what did support you know or what areas did
[0:34:48] Voice 6: support locations of elements at risk even if they don't anymore we don't remove it from our system
[0:34:54] Voice 6: if uh just because it's no longer there um so it's a vetted observation uh there is a difference
[0:35:03] Voice 6: between an observation and an element occurrence so we will look to observation data and we will
[0:35:10] Voice 6: ask um is it reliable so that's the vetted part of it is a reliable observation um does it have
[0:35:17] Voice 6: practical conservation value. So given potential for continued or historic presence or regular
[0:35:26] Voice 6: occurrence at a given location, and that it sustains the survival of that species
[0:35:31] Voice 6: or ecological community. So examples here would be we wouldn't map a bird sitting in a tree
[0:35:41] Voice 6: necessarily good observations totally valid but we don't we want it to be an area of land that
[0:35:50] Voice 6: you can manage for and if we saw if we have no observation of a bird in a tree likely wouldn't
[0:35:56] Voice 6: be mapped as an occurrence however over time seeing that same thing occurring there may make
[0:36:02] Voice 6: it eligible for an element occurrence a nest in a tree certainly is an area or a location that you
[0:36:08] Voice 6: you can make management decisions around,
[0:36:10] Voice 6: and so that would be mapped as an element occurrence.
[0:36:13] Voice 6: A snake den would be mapped as an element occurrence,
[0:36:16] Voice 6: but a snake crossing a footpath likely would not.
[0:36:23] Voice 6: There's always nuances to that,
[0:36:25] Voice 6: but that's the general idea behind that.
[0:36:31] Voice 6: An element occurrence represents a population
[0:36:33] Voice 6: based on dispersal and breeding.
[0:36:36] Voice 6: So we look to NatureServe to help guide our mapping and there is recommended separation distances that determines whether two separate locations would be considered one population or two populations.
[0:36:54] Voice 6: We look at things like suitable or unsuitable habitat that are considered in determining what that distance is as well.
[0:37:03] Voice 6: So one element occurrence can be made up of many locations that are separate. An element
[0:37:11] Voice 6: occurrence is always what we know, not what we assume or suspect. So if we saw a moth on a host
[0:37:18] Voice 6: plant, we would map the location of that moth. Even if that plant, you know, it continues on
[0:37:24] Voice 6: through a field, we wouldn't necessarily map that field. We would map the location of where we know
[0:37:28] Voice 6: that moth occurred. EOs are always mapped as polygons. That polygon, contrary to some
[0:37:40] Voice 6: misconceptions, is not hiding or obscuring the location of a species or ecosystem at risk.
[0:37:47] Voice 6: The polygon is there to reflect the locational uncertainty associated with the source data.
[0:37:54] Voice 6: So what you'll find is that observations that have been collected using high-end GPSs that we've received in the last number of years will have very small buffers around them because the uncertainty associated with those may be 15 meters.
[0:38:13] Voice 6: We never know exactly where something is to reflect on a map.
[0:38:18] Voice 6: The older, there's standards, but some of the older observations we have will have a larger
[0:38:23] Voice 6: buffer on them because it's based on coordinates that have been provided to, you know, maybe not
[0:38:30] Voice 6: to as fine a scale as we would like. So the point of the of the polygon is to ensure we capture the
[0:38:37] Voice 6: actual location so that you can manage for it. We want to make sure that we don't lose that by just
[0:38:42] Voice 6: submitting giving a point. Having said that the underlying data are available and we can have
[0:38:48] Voice 6: conversations if that's something you know a data standard that helps you in your work but you know
[0:38:54] Voice 6: we don't like to recommend that for management decisions at all. And then as said we look to
[0:39:01] Voice 6: NatureServe to provide guidance for determining what what is an element occurrence for a species
[0:39:08] Voice 6: so that's where we get our guidance. I just wanted to do a quick quick walk through of an example
[0:39:17] Voice 6: for an EO for red-legged frog.
[0:39:19] Voice 6: So we might start by mapping a point, a line or a polygon.
[0:39:25] Voice 6: Perhaps it's a single point observation
[0:39:27] Voice 6: or perhaps it was observed along a stretch of stream
[0:39:31] Voice 6: in which case we're mapping a stream or a lake.
[0:39:35] Voice 6: Whatever that beginning source data is,
[0:39:38] Voice 6: we apply that uncertainty buffer
[0:39:41] Voice 6: so that we ensure we capture the actual location.
[0:39:43] Voice 6: location. And then, so here I'm going to show you an example. We end up with that source feature,
[0:39:50] Voice 6: sorry, at the end. So all of our source features are polygons. Now we're looking at all of these
[0:39:55] Voice 6: locations of the northern red-legged frog. We have one polygon source feature here, or initial
[0:40:03] Voice 6: visit, I should say. But we've got a greater than five kilometer separation between these other
[0:40:11] Voice 6: source features. Because of the guidelines that NatureServe has provided us with, these are
[0:40:17] Voice 6: determined to be two separate element occurrences. One has only one source feature associated with it.
[0:40:23] Voice 6: The one to the southeast has 11 separate source features associated with it. I'm happy to talk
[0:40:31] Voice 6: about that more. You can always reach out to me. So element occurrence data sources.
[0:40:40] Voice 6: So we've seen how we map an element occurrence, but where does the data come from?
[0:40:45] Voice 6: As you know, there's only a few staff of us and, you know, our staff really like to get into the field and conduct fieldwork, keep up our skills.
[0:40:53] Voice 6: But data generally do come from other sources. We've got within the government.
[0:40:59] Voice 6: We look to within our same branch knowledge management branch.
[0:41:02] Voice 6: branch, there are people that manage the observation data sets in the province and the reports.
[0:41:09] Voice 6: So they deal with all the submissions that come in to the province and the CDC pulls
[0:41:14] Voice 6: those that are relevant to us.
[0:41:16] Voice 6: So we look to EcoCat reports, survey data, telemetry data, incidental observations, fish
[0:41:24] Voice 6: observations, different ecosystem mapping products, so terrestrial ecosystem mapping
[0:41:29] Voice 6: and predictive ecosystem mapping, and sensitive ecosystems inventories.
[0:41:35] Voice 6: External though, we're not tied to just getting internal government,
[0:41:39] Voice 6: we can go out and look for other data sources. So we look to COSIWC reports, which is the
[0:41:45] Voice 6: Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada, and so that's a national organization
[0:41:50] Voice 6: who does reporting. We look to recovery and management plan reports, museum specimens,
[0:41:59] Voice 6: specimens, museum records, and more and more we're looking at citizen science and how we can use that information to inform our mapping.
[0:42:09] Voice 6: It's still, we're still figuring out how to navigate that, those massive data sets, but yeah, but they're proving to be more and more valuable.
[0:42:19] Voice 6: So some of those include e-fauna or e-flora, iNaturalist, which many of you may be familiar with, eBird, and GBIF, which is Global Biodiversity.
[0:42:32] Voice 6: I can't remember the rest of that one. I'm sorry.
[0:42:37] Voice 6: We also do get data submissions coming directly to the CDC, and so we can incorporate those as well.
[0:42:43] Voice 6: Although we always encourage going to the provincial data repository, so it's available to everybody.
[0:42:49] Voice 6: So the next thing we do, as said, is it a reliable observation, like does it make sense, or is it way out of its range, in which case we'd want to do some follow up with whoever observed that we want to just ensure that it's, it is what it is I mean some species
[0:43:05] Voice 6: are just not easy to identify.
[0:43:08] Voice 6: We asked that question does it have practical conservation value.
[0:43:12] Voice 6: you. And then we do have minimum data requirements that need to be met. We want to know who observed
[0:43:17] Voice 6: it, when they observed it, then of course the species name and where it occurred. So those
[0:43:24] Voice 6: are very minimal of what we need to map. And then if all of that information is or we have
[0:43:30] Voice 6: all that information and that criteria are met, we can map that as an element occurrence.
[0:43:36] Voice 6: And if we have enough information, ideally we would be able to apply an element occurrence rank.
[0:43:42] Voice 6: is separate from a conservation status rank that's at the element level, the EO rank is applied at
[0:43:48] Voice 6: the element occurrence level and says how well it's doing at that location, which in turn feeds
[0:43:55] Voice 6: back into whether it's viable, whether it has high ecological integrity, and that's again considered
[0:44:02] Voice 6: into the conservation status rank. So how can you find the CDC element occurrence data online?
[0:44:12] Voice 6: I'll show you in the demos but through our online tools you can find the following public spatial layers. So publicly we have the first one publicly available occurrences.
[0:44:23] Voice 6: That's 90% of our data that are publicly available. We have separated out the extirpated and historical ones.
[0:44:30] Voice 6: ones basically in an effort not to hide our um or like not hide but obscure some of our more
[0:44:37] Voice 6: finely mapped occurrences with those kind of larger historical ones that sometimes obliterate
[0:44:43] Voice 6: an area so they're but it's still important data to have because many times you know the
[0:44:49] Voice 6: province is vast we have not gone back to particular locations necessarily so we just
[0:44:56] Voice 6: don't have confirmation that it's still there, but quite possibly in some areas it is.
[0:45:02] Voice 6: And then we have masks secured. So that is a representation that you can see of where we have
[0:45:08] Voice 6: secured or restricted data, CDC data, and I'll talk a bit about that.
[0:45:14] Voice 6: Our restricted layers include, I'll talk about these, but species that are susceptible to harm
[0:45:20] Voice 6: or persecution and data that are considered to be proprietary. And you can find these through
[0:45:26] Voice 6: to the BC Data Catalog and the IMAP applications,
[0:45:29] Voice 6: including CDC IMAP and Habitat Wizard.
[0:45:34] Voice 6: So I'm gonna move into a bit about data security.
[0:45:37] Voice 6: And part of that is to give you the background
[0:45:40] Voice 6: that in 2011, the province of BC introduced
[0:45:44] Voice 6: the open information and open data policy.
[0:45:47] Voice 6: This was great because by default,
[0:45:50] Voice 6: CDC has allowed its data to be open.
[0:45:52] Voice 6: And so we aligned really well with this already.
[0:45:55] Voice 6: The thought being that government data should be accessible and available, and to restrict that data requires a strong rationale.
[0:46:05] Voice 6: We've always, along with the NatureServe network, been a huge proponent of accessible data, so this was great.
[0:46:13] Voice 6: And we believe that protection and recovery of species and ecosystems is dependent on access to that best available data and information.
[0:46:21] Voice 6: information and knowledge is power and the more that we share the better.
[0:46:25] Voice 6: Having said that, there are reasons that we restrict access to some data.
[0:46:30] Voice 6: And I'll talk about that in the next couple of slides.
[0:46:36] Voice 6: So categories of secure data, we have
[0:46:41] Voice 6: species susceptible to persecution or harm.
[0:46:44] Voice 6: And this basically covers where a species is at risk of intentional
[0:46:49] Voice 6: persecution or illegal collection or unintentional harassment.
[0:46:53] Voice 6: So Western rattlesnake, where there are people that don't like snakes and can destroy hundreds of individuals if they know where a den is.
[0:47:02] Voice 6: A legal collection, we've got a peregrine falcon here, so falconers could collect the eggs or the young for falconry.
[0:47:11] Voice 6: And unintentional harassment could be sharp-tailed grouse leks, where it's really interesting for people to go and see the dancing grounds but can unintentionally disturb them.
[0:47:23] Voice 6: The other reason is that data and information are proprietary. So this includes data collected on
[0:47:29] Voice 6: private land where the private land owner has requested it not be released publicly
[0:47:34] Voice 6: or the data owner who submits the data wants it to be restricted for a time limit for example.
[0:47:44] Voice 6: But we want to make sure that we're transparent about where secure data is because
[0:47:49] Voice 6: we need it to be available to those that require the information to make informed decisions.
[0:47:53] Voice 6: So if you're conducting a project in an area, we need for you to be able to see that you're not seeing everything, and we need you to reach out to us to determine whether that species is best served for you to know it's there.
[0:48:07] Voice 6: So you can see that you would see this big gray mask that tells you to reach out to us.
[0:48:11] Voice 6: We need to know what activities are happening or why you need the data in your particular project area.
[0:48:19] Voice 6: So please do reach out. And through Species and Ecosystems Explorer, you would see that lock saying that that element has some secured or restricted locations.
[0:48:32] Voice 6: So this data is not inaccessible. It is accessible to those who need it.
[0:48:37] Voice 6: So I just like to say that we're not we're not restricting it from everybody, but we're restricting it from public access.
[0:48:44] Voice 6: So again, you just need to reach out to us with information and details of why you need that data.
[0:48:50] Voice 6: If you do, if we determine you need that data, you need to complete data security training and a confidentiality and non-reproduction agreement.
[0:48:58] Voice 6: And that will be in place for three years for you.
[0:49:01] Voice 6: However, every time you return a need or request new secure data, we do this screening on every request.
[0:49:10] Voice 6: Oh, yeah. So other spatial data products we're working on.
[0:49:15] Voice 6: So we've talked about documented, which is our element occurrences, but we're looking at the potential, which is range data.
[0:49:22] Voice 6: So within the general area where a species or ecological community is expected to occur within suitable habitat.
[0:49:30] Voice 6: We're using ecosection line work for this as our data standard.
[0:49:34] Voice 6: Most species and ecological communities have a draft range map.
[0:49:40] Voice 6: They're undergoing review at this time, though.
[0:49:42] Voice 6: So once those reviews are completed, that data will be accessible for download and public viewing this year.
[0:49:50] Voice 6: And then we're also looking at the very beginning stages of species habitat models or SHM.
[0:49:56] Voice 6: So it's a new project. We're starting out with focusing on potential methods and inputs into that data.
[0:50:04] Voice 6: But this will help, again, refine within that range where that species or community is likely to be found.
[0:50:11] Voice 6: So that's really exciting multi year project. I like to highlight this slide, just to show you, kind of, I'm not going to read out all of the uses and users, but what what we're telling you here is to support all of these uses and users.
[0:50:28] Voice 6: The more data and the more robust and complete our information is the better we can meet all of these needs.
[0:50:34] Voice 6: needs. Most of our data is publicly accessible, but we respond to about 900 custom requests
[0:50:44] Voice 6: for data every year to help support all of these needs. So all to say, we do want to
[0:50:50] Voice 6: use your data. How to submit your data? We like to route it again through the BC government
[0:50:58] Voice 6: government data repository because submitting to the province is is truly submitting to an open
[0:51:06] Voice 6: data repository since we have an open data policy from this website you can find standards and data
[0:51:15] Voice 6: collection templates and experts to help you at spymail.gov.bc.ca so they will they can help you
[0:51:22] Voice 6: in your submission process now we do need that minimum information of who what where and when
[0:51:28] Voice 6: so keep that in mind um if you're submitting incidental observations uh unfortunately the
[0:51:36] Voice 6: website the government website for that is not functioning they'll route you to submit using an
[0:51:41] Voice 6: excel spreadsheet which is great and if you need help contact spy mail having said that i do
[0:51:46] Voice 6: understand that incidental observations can be, you know, a little challenging to submit.
[0:51:53] Voice 6: So I'm sure you're all aware, but iNaturalist is a super fun, you can lose yourself in it forever,
[0:52:00] Voice 6: and you can see here, this is just a screenshot, there's 22,000 observations just on Salt Spring
[0:52:06] Voice 6: Island alone. So you can use this, the CDC does look to this as a data, you know, as one of our
[0:52:14] Voice 6: data sources, so I would recommend having a look because it's super fun. Please make sure you use
[0:52:19] Voice 6: inaturalist.ca and not .org, because we can actually get access to data much more easily
[0:52:26] Voice 6: through .ca. And if you are on the fence about obscuring or letting it be public, everything's
[0:52:34] Voice 6: easier for us if you allow it to be public, but if you do obscure it, we actually can reach out
[0:52:40] Voice 6: to you to see what we can do with it, so keep that in mind as well. In a nutshell, quick overview of
[0:52:49] Voice 6: our tools on the next few slides and then I think we've got questions, but the CDC can tell you
[0:52:55] Voice 6: what's in BC, how is it doing, where is it potentially found, where is it known to be found,
[0:53:01] Voice 6: and how is it doing at that location. How? Through our tools. So BC Species and Ecosystems Explore,
[0:53:09] Voice 6: What do we use this for? You can search by species or ecological community name and get information.
[0:53:16] Voice 6: You can generate lists based on conservation status, BC Red Blue Yellow list, or legal
[0:53:21] Voice 6: designation like Species at Risk Act or SARA or the Forest Range Practices Act. You can generate
[0:53:29] Voice 6: lists by species group or community group. You can search by area and get results of what
[0:53:35] Voice 6: potentially might be found in your area not necessarily known to occur but potentially
[0:53:40] Voice 6: unsuitable habitat and that's based on our underlying range maps that are still undergoing
[0:53:45] Voice 6: review so you will find a bit of some some strange results sometimes if you do see strange results
[0:53:51] Voice 6: come back to us and we can help kind of navigate that you can find best management practices
[0:53:58] Voice 6: view reports and export those reports to excel in pdf you can also see an overview of mapped
[0:54:04] Voice 6: no locations. Oh, and in Islands Trust I found there are 350 potential elements at risk. CDC
[0:54:15] Voice 6: IMAP spatial application, view element occurrences in your area, search for element occurrences for
[0:54:22] Voice 6: one particular element, you can view detailed reports, look for secure data, see if there's
[0:54:28] Voice 6: anything you need to reach out to us for, you can export those results to shapefile or excel or
[0:54:34] Voice 6: on CSB. And you can add in additional data layers. A quick search of Islands Trust, there's 541 mapped

[1:01:47] Voice 6: can answer this in a better way, but we really do look at BC when it comes to how at-risk something
[1:01:52] Voice 6: is. So you're right, it could be critically imperiled in BC, but then secure south of us.
[1:02:01] Voice 6: so that certainly happens, but I think it allows us to still recognize that, you know, we have
[1:02:08] Voice 6: responsibility in BC for that species, and it's at the end of its range, so it's quite, you know,
[1:02:13] Voice 6: it's more at risk of being lost, because we've only got a little amount, and lost from BC, of course,
[1:02:20] Voice 6: so yeah, that's, I mean, that's very common, and if you want a, you know, more informed answer,

[1:04:20] Voice 6: legal designations and then do my area search so if you see a yellow listed species in your
[1:04:26] Voice 6: search results probably because it's legally designated or it got switched from um blue to
[1:04:33] Voice 6: yellow and we haven't yet kind of removed that from the search so yeah um

[1:05:01] Voice 6: because a lot of those results that you're getting in an area-based search they're based on
[1:05:09] Voice 6: the draft ranges we have of species and ecological communities at risk so what what we did was
[1:05:17] Voice 6: we're using ecosections, which can be quite large scale and broad in areas of the province.
[1:05:23] Voice 6: We started by bringing in observations, element occurrences, and overlaying that with ecosections.
[1:05:29] Voice 6: So if you had an observation overlapping an ecosection, just barely within it,
[1:05:34] Voice 6: that whole ecosection gets highlighted as the potential range of that species.
[1:05:40] Voice 6: In some cases, the observation may, maybe it wasn't a super reliable one. That's what our review is pulling out.
[1:05:51] Voice 6: So there's a couple of things. One, if islands trust, for example, is only barely intersecting an ecosection,
[1:06:00] Voice 6: it may bring in all these species, you know, that are considered within that ecosection.
[1:06:06] Voice 6: so there's some nuances around that data I think when it's publicly available and downloadable it'll
[1:06:12] Voice 6: be easier for people to kind of see why they're getting certain results but if you're seeing
[1:06:17] Voice 6: results that are don't make sense please let us know and we just flag that for the expert reviews
[1:06:24] Voice 6: and and those reviews are happening by species specialists that will look at them and say you
[1:06:30] Voice 6: you know, take that eco section out. That's not right. So they will get better over time in,
[1:06:36] Voice 6: and their, their reservies are happening now. If you're, if like the definition of potential,
[1:06:42] Voice 6: I guess what we're saying is that the potential within suitable habitat is there for those
[1:06:50] Voice 6: results once we get them to that reviewed stage.

[1:07:00] Voice 2: as well and and highlight the area that you're looking for because that gives you more accurate

[1:10:34] Voice 6: if that's the case for we need to know how we can use it so can we release the details publicly or
[1:10:41] Voice 6: are they requested to be secured we certainly don't encourage securing it really adds a lot of
[1:10:48] Voice 6: work to our workload but certainly we can secure it as long as we can manage it within our system
[1:10:57] Voice 6: um manage that release uh when we deem it necessary we struggle with data sets that
[1:11:06] Voice 6: are requested to be secured um because it we want the value of that data to be there for us to use
[1:11:13] Voice 6: so we have to weigh kind of the management it requires to or sorry the time and resources to
[1:11:19] Voice 6: manage secure data versus the value of that data but yes you're correct we do need assurance we
[1:11:26] Voice 6: We don't need writing, but we need assurance that that landowner knows it's being submitted.

[1:13:02] Voice 4: for the last four years um consistently every year and we have you know picture proof from every year
[1:13:10] Voice 4: for during the months that it's there you guys have um we can submit that as well with our data
[1:13:20] Voice 6: yeah i think that's all important information i think we can't have too much uh context to an
[1:13:27] Voice 6: observation so i think that is valuable to know um and you know if it's found throughout a whole
[1:13:33] Voice 6: property i i think the the best data we can have is still all of the point that that's how you've
[1:13:39] Voice 6: collected it um if you've interpreted that by also kind of like collecting a polygon or something
[1:13:47] Voice 6: that can also be submitted that's also useful but um we'd love to see i think all of the uh
[1:13:52] Voice 6: the points that have been collected and then and then we have the most information to make our own

[1:22:06] Voice 6: confusion around it which is why i'm definitely going to show this and will be improved in our
[1:22:10] Voice 6: next iteration of this. This here, export search results, exports, so it provides you a table of
[1:22:18] Voice 6: what you see on the screen here, although all 85 records, nothing more. If you export the summary
[1:22:26] Voice 6: data, that gives you a lot more information that people have found are missing from the results
[1:22:34] Voice 6: export. So this will tell you which municipalities it occurs in, like in a field. It has a lot more
[1:22:43] Voice 6: information that you'll find in those reports. The conservation status export is the information,
[1:22:49] Voice 6: again, that you saw in the conservation status report that tells you why it's given a particular
[1:22:56] Voice 6: So basically, this is one export, this is one export, and then there's that very summary one, which is this.
[1:23:06] Voice 6: It's not intuitive. I know this because I get asked that all the time.
[1:23:11] Voice 6: Other important things to point out is the search criteria.
[1:23:15] Voice 6: So if you are going like, this doesn't make sense, what are these results I'm seeing?
[1:23:20] Voice 6: Reach out to us and provide us with this.
[1:23:22] Voice 6: This can help you determine what you've got results for and it can help us find any errors
[1:23:28] Voice 6: or mistakes. So we love to hear from people. Citation and that is the only other thing I
[1:23:35] Voice 6: need to show here is if you go to those map locations, clicking on a occurrence and opening
[1:23:43] Voice 6: the full record bumps you out into CDC IMAP where it will zoom you into the actual occurrence
[1:23:49] Voice 6: location then you can start playing an IMAP if you want but I tend not to go at it from that

[1:24:42] Voice 6: And hopefully that will be useful to you. So if we click on layers, the CDC layers are all farmed under the fish, wildlife and plant species and I'm going to just open that up a bit.
[1:24:54] Voice 6: We've got our publicly available, extirpated and mass secured.
[1:24:58] Voice 6: And we'll just go on the top here, add data BC layers. Ones I like to highlight that you can add into view are the WSI which is the wildlife species inventory layers.
[1:25:09] Voice 6: And I'll let you play with that, but I'll just add in the survey observations.
[1:25:14] Voice 6: The other one I like to bring to people's attention is the critical habitat for federally listed species is another one that people are really interested in.

[1:25:34] Voice 6: and the cool thing is you can do that here and you can do that in explore and get your potential

[1:25:45] Voice 6: you could draw your area of interest and then export that as a shape file that markup is a
[1:25:51] Voice 6: shape file and then use it in the future and then explore what i'm going to do though is concentrate

[1:30:07] Voice 6: one of the things that I always recommend not doing is using the point tool like the the one
[1:30:15] Voice 6: to find out what's in your area of interest getting it right in the right location or if
[1:30:22] Voice 6: you're just wanting to know what that one occurrence is and using a point doesn't always
[1:30:25] Voice 6: these you might not just be right in the right spot so I tend to hesitate to use this and I like
[1:30:30] Voice 6: to use these three to get the quickest results or four I should say now let's say we're using
[1:30:36] Voice 6: the rectangle to see what's in our area um if you often this is overlooked identifiable layers is
[1:30:44] Voice 6: is telling the system what you're interested in knowing is in the area so if you check click on
[1:30:51] Voice 6: this if you've got like world tuple map citations on it's going to return results for that my guess
[1:30:57] Voice 6: is you don't you're not interested in that so and you may have other base map and boundaries
[1:31:03] Voice 6: that aren't of interest for your particular query so i tend to clear it all and then just choose the
[1:31:08] Voice 6: ones i am interested in so let's say i'm just interested in the two cdc layers at this time
[1:31:15] Voice 6: So now if I'm, let's just say I'm doing some project here, but I know that it's important
[1:31:23] Voice 6: to consider what else is mapped and known in the area. I would tend to buffer my query by
[1:31:30] Voice 6: a couple of kilometers, depending on what kind of project you're undergoing. And then we can,

[1:32:28] Voice 6: and you can export that to PDF. If we click on one of these records, we can get more information
[1:32:34] Voice 6: just about that one occurrence record.
[1:32:37] Voice 6: So there's occurrence data, things like that.
[1:32:41] Voice 6: I'm gonna close that individual one.
[1:32:44] Voice 6: One thing that not everyone realizes
[1:32:45] Voice 6: is you can click on this stacked panel action menu
[1:32:50] Voice 6: and view this information in a table.
[1:32:53] Voice 6: So it allows you to see the information a little,
[1:32:56] Voice 6: you know, in a perhaps easier way.
[1:32:59] Voice 6: If we had multiple layers we were querying,
[1:33:02] Voice 6: they would all kind of come up as tabs along here. From here, you can export to Excel
[1:33:08] Voice 6: or to comma separated value. I personally, I like the list of you, so I'm going to go back here.
[1:33:16] Voice 6: One thing that you can do is also export to shapefile. And if you had results from, again,
[1:33:23] Voice 6: three or four different layers, they all will get exported into separate shapefiles that you can use
[1:33:31] Voice 6: by reloading back into an IMAP application,
[1:33:34] Voice 6: or you can actually load it into Google Earth,
[1:33:36] Voice 6: which I know a lot of people like to do.
[1:33:38] Voice 6: So in Google Earth, you can add a shape file
[1:33:41] Voice 6: and even convert it to KML there.
[1:33:43] Voice 6: So that's really useful for people.
[1:33:47] Voice 6: If you're interested in just wanting to know
[1:33:50] Voice 6: about one particular species or ecological community,
[1:33:54] Voice 6: we can do a quick select.
[1:33:56] Voice 6: And so this allows us with all of this language here,
[1:34:00] Voice 6: basically just to select for one particular species,
[1:34:04] Voice 6: and it will provide you all the element occurrences
[1:34:06] Voice 6: we have in the province for that.
[1:34:09] Voice 6: I'll just pick that first one there.
[1:34:12] Voice 6: Now, what will be interesting,
[1:34:14] Voice 6: you can see like you actually can't even see where these are
[1:34:17] Voice 6: and that's because they're probably fine polygons,
[1:34:19] Voice 6: which is why in Explorer, we provide that.
