Island Trust Council will review governance review report  
at the March 2022 quarterly meeting in Nanaimo

ʷəŋən, METULIYE/Victoria, B.C. – Great Northern Management, the consultants hired to undertake a 
governance, management, and operations review of Island Trust, has completed their work and the findings will 
be shared by the consultant with Island Trust Council on March 8, 2022. At that time, Islands Trust Council will 
review and discuss the report’s recommendations and potential next steps.  The meeting will be a hybrid 
electronic and in-person meeting. Details on how to watch or attend the meeting can be found at:

Great Northern Management was contracted in May 2021 to conduct a governance, management, and 
operations review of Island Trust. The review included assessing Islands Trust’s current performance, practices, 
work processes, decision-making systems and the organization’s structure, policies and procedures. They also 
evaluated how effective and efficient the organization is at carrying out its mandate. Island Trust created a 
select committee to guide the review. The committee held nine meetings over the last year. Recordings of those

current draft of the Great Northern Management report will be available today, as part of the Executive 
Committee agenda package, which can be found at https://islandstrust.bc.ca/event/executive-committee-
regular-meeting-2022-03/. Island Trust will not review the report for any errors of fact prior to it being added to 
the Trust Council agenda.

governance review,” said Peter Luckham, Islands Trust Council Chair. “Island Trust Council and staff are 
committed to continually improving how we implement the Islands Trust’s preserve and protect mandate.” 
 
Island Trust preserves and protects the islands in the context of many complex challenges, including climate 
change, lack of affordable housing, freshwater limitations, hundreds of species at risk, development and tourism 
pressures, changing demographics, and high expectations for public engagement. The report findings and 
recommendations will help Islands Trust Council identify actions for Island Trust to take to modernize the 
governance framework and deliver the preserve and protect mandate more effectively and efficiently.
