Subject: Electoral Area Director’s Report 
 
• The Board endorsed, in principle, the draft of the updated Drinking Water and Watershed 
Protection Action Plan. The plan is now available for public review and comment through the RDN’s 
Get Involved website (https://www.rdn.bc.ca/get-involved-rdn) until January 20
th
. 
• The Child Care Needs Assessment, which is a partnership between the RDN, City of Nanaimo, 
Parksville, Qualicum Beach, and Lantzville is open for another week or so 
https://www.nanaimo.ca/your-government/projects/projects-detail/child-care-needs-assessment. 
• The RDN Board is in the process of budget planning with some changes designed to make progress 
in the priorities identified in the strategic plan. Some of the inclusions in the budget are: 
o An increase in the Regional Parks and Trails parcel tax to go towards regional parks 
acquisition and improvements 
o An increase in the Drinking Water and Watershed Protection parcel tax to address the 
priorities identified in the updated 10-year action plan 
o Funding to continue the Sea Level Rise Adaptation Program – the next stage is to 
produce a combined river hazard mapping and risk assessment. The Board supported 
staff in applying to the provincial Community Emergency Preparedness Fund for 
matching funds 
o Funding to support a new Climate Change Technical Advisory Committee, including staff 
time 
• The Board approved entering into a contract with SD68 and SD69 to implement a School Education 
Pilot Project on solid waste for 1 year 
• The Board received a report with data on viewership of the live streaming/webcast of RDN 
meetings. Although the viewership was not high, the Board felt it was important to continue the 
service. 
• RDN Transit service has recently been expanded to include service to the airport – buses will run 
between downtown and the airport five times daily between Monday and Friday. 
Upcoming:  
• The Electoral Area Service Committee and the Committee of the Whole meetings are upcoming on 
January 14
th
 and February 11th. Upcoming Board meetings are on January 28
th
 and February 25
th
.
