New Name for Islands Trust’s Conservancy 
VICTORIA  - The Islands Trust is pleased to announce the Province’s decision to rename the Islands Trust Fund to the 
Islands Trust Conservancy.  
 
For many years, the Conservancy has been concerned that the previous name was a barrier to effective communication 
and fundraising. On May 31, 2018, the provincial legislature amended the Islands Trust Act to reflect the change in name.  
 
“The old name, Islands Trust Fund, was confusing and didn’t describe our work,” said Tony Law, Chair of the newly 
renamed Islands Trust Conservancy Board. “By changing our name to Islands Trust Conservancy, we believe the public will 
better understand our mission. With the pressures facing island ecosystems, the work of the Islands Trust Conservancy to 
protect natural areas has never been more important. ” 
 
“The Islands Trust is sincerely grateful to the provincial government, and particularly Minister Selena Robinson, for 
responding to our long-standing request to change the name of our in-house land conservancy,” said Peter Luckham, 
Chair of the Islands Trust Council. “This is a positive step towards even greater conservation success on the islands.” 
 
“Natural areas are a big part of what makes living in British Columbia so great,” said Selina Robinson, Minister of 
Municipal Affairs and Housing. “Our government is pleased to support the name change to help the Islands Trust 
Conservancy continue to protect sensitive ecosystems in this beautiful area of the province.” 
 
The islands that make up the Islands Trust Area provide sanctuary to a rich diversity of wildlife, plants and ecosystems, 
many of which are federally and globally rare. The ecosystems of the islands are among the most critically imperiled in 
British Columbia and are in urgent need of protection.
