Gabriola Island Bald Eagle Nest Inventory 2014 A summary of nest records and nest locations of all the known Bald Eagle nests on Gabriola Island Acknowledgements Funding for site visits to eagle nests and for the preparation of this report was provided by Gabriola Rescue of Wildlife Society (GROWLS) and the Islands Trust. Site visits were made by Ian Moul, Ian Lawrence, and Darlene Mace This report was compiled by Ian Moul Thank-you to the many residents of Gabriola Island who invited us to their homes and shared their love of eagles. Eagles prefer to build their nests in large trees in locations that have a commanding view of the ocean. They often perch where they can see both their chicks and their nest plus watch for fish, their main source of food. Eagles defend nesting territories of about 1km of coastline. They often have more than one nest and move between them over the years. On Gabriola Island over the last 20 years we have identified 49 eagle nest trees. Some nest trees have fallen, some nests have fallen from the trees. In 2014 we located 22 eagle nests, 15 were being used by the eagles. Eagle nests were grouped in nesting territories based on how close they are together and the history of nesting activity. We started at the Ferry Dock and worked clockwise around the island One page summary sheets for each nest site are available at www.growls.ca Most eagle nests are located on private property and we rely on land owners to protect eagle nests and perch trees. Eagles get used to human activity below their nests, but often abandon their nests if disturbed in the early nesting season, especially in February through April. When observing Bald Eagles at there nests please do not get too close and risk disturbing the eagles. Please respect private property and personal privacy when viewing nests near peoples homes.
