The Hornby Island shoreline is largely bedrock and resistant to erosion. There are a few pebble/ sand beaches 
that are important recreational areas, Tribune Bay and Whaling Station Bay. The southeast side of Hornby 
Island is exposed to southeasterly storm waves and waves, and the north side of Hornby Island is exposed to 
northwesterly winds and waves.   There are no areas of fine sediments/ mudflats/ or protected estuaries of low 
water circulation identified.  Whaling Station Bay has an extensive sand flat but has adequate water circulation.  
There are accumulations of pebble/sand/cobble/shellhash just below the high waterline on the extensive wave-
cut platforms on the south and on the northwest sides of Hornby Island.  There are moderate (2-5 m width) 
loglines on much (~50%) of the Hornby Island shoreline. There were very few areas of saltmarsh, identified 
as Salicornia spp., bio-banding in the 1990 Shorezone data.  Dune grasses and sedges were not mapped in 
the 1990 dataset, however, they were discernible in the review of c. 1980 fixed-wing aerial video imagery, 
and in the Islands Trust imagery (Figure 6.).
