Islands Trust Chief Administrative Officer to Retire

 ʷəŋən, METULIYE/Victoria, B.C. –  After eight years with Islands Trust, Islands Trust Chief Administrative Officer Russ 
Hotsenpiller has announced he will retire in June 2024.  
 
Mr. Hotsenpiller joined Islands Trust as Chief Administrative Officer in 2016, after four years as the Chief Administrative 
Officer for Strathcona Regional District.  
 
“My experience at the Trust has been fantastic,” said Mr. Hotsenpiller. “The preserve and protect mandate of the Trust is 
unique in local governance across the country. It has been an honour to work towards a better future for the region.” 
 
“We offer great thanks to Russ Hotsenpiller for his service to the Islands Trust”, said Peter Luckham, Chair, Islands Trust 
Council. “Russ has advised Trust Council through three terms of office and consistently demonstrated strong judgement, 
good humour, dedication, and a commitment to the preserve and protect mandate.” 
 
“In January, the Islands Trust Executive Committee will begin coordination of Chief Administrative Officer Hiring 
Committee”, continued Luckham. “By policy this committee consists of the Executive Committee and the chairs of Trust 
Council’s committees. This committee will seek input from Trust Council regarding advertising, evaluation methodology, 
and screening tools. We look forward to having fulsome conversations with all trustees.” 
 
The hiring process for the Islands Trust Chief Administrative Officer must follow the requirements of the BC Public Service 
Act, including the policies and procedures of the BC Public Service Agency and requirements of the BC Merit 
Commissioner.

Islands Trust is a special-purpose government representing over 30,000 people living within the Islands Trust Area and 
10,000 non-resident property owners. The Islands Trust Area is located within Coast Salish territory and is the homeland 
to many Coast Salish Peoples who have called this place home since time immemorial. Islands Trust is responsible for 
preserving and protecting the Islands Trust Area's unique amenities and environment through conservation-oriented land 
use planning and regulation, education, and cooperation with First Nations and other agencies. The Islands Trust Area 
covers the islands and waters between the British Columbia mainland and southern Vancouver Island. It includes 13 
major islands and more than 450 smaller islands covering 5,200 square kilometres.
