Friends of the Gulf Islands Society is a growing group of BC residents concerned about the 
distressing direcDon in which the Islands Trust has been moving over the past several years.  The 
shiH towards community needs has now superseded the protecDon of the natural environment 
and is conDnuing in spite of opposiDon by a number of trustees and several concerned 
organizaDons. AddiDonal development and other community objecDves are being brought 
forward for approval without adequate environmental scruDny that should be central to 
decisions made by the Islands Trust Council and Local Trust CommiNees (LTCs). In doing so, we 
believe the Islands Trust has strayed from its central mission: to achieve the object of the Trust 
Act, Sec 3. “...to preserve and protect the Trust Area and its unique ameniDes and environment 
for the benefit of the residents of the Trust Area and of BriDsh Columbia.....”. 
 
As noted by Great Northern Management in their 2022 Governance Review of the Trust: 
“Islands Trust lacks both a comprehensive analysis of the Trust Area’s capacity to sustain 
current populaDon and acDvity, and its ability to accommodate more growth and 
development, especially in light of climate change and other consideraDons. These 
include adequacy of water supply, rising sea levels, wildfire risks, threats to ecosystems, 
stringent environmental protecDon regulaDons, the in
