ISLAND TRUSTEES BEGIN FOUR YEAR TERM

 ʷəŋən, METULIYE/Victoria, B.C.  – Following local elections held on October 15
th
, 2022 11 incumbents, 12 new trustees, 
and three former trustees have now been confirmed as elected or acclaimed as Islands Trust trustees. 
 
Fifty-three candidates, including 15 incumbents, submitted nomination papers for Islands Trust trustee. In two of the 
local trust areas – Gambier Island and Saturna Island – no ballots were cast as candidates were acclaimed. 
 
Like other communities in British Columbia, island communities elect their local representatives every four years. Voters 
in each of the twelve local trust areas elect two trustees to serve on their local trust committee and to represent their 
area on Islands Trust Council. Local trustees serve a four-year term and make land use policy and regulatory decisions 
for their communities. Local trust committees are responsible for decisions about preparation and adoption of official 
community plans, zoning and subdivision bylaws, regulation of soil removal and deposit, and authorization of permits. 
On Bowen Island, the community elected two municipal trustees at the same time they elected the Bowen Island Municipal 
Council. The municipal trustees represent Bowen Island on the Islands Trust Council.  
 
The Islands Trust Council has a provincial mandate to preserve and protect the Islands Trust Area and its unique amenities 
and environment for residents and all British Columbians. To carry out this mandate, it makes decisions about overall 
policy, staff resources and budget. Three elected trustees will serve on the Islands Trust Conservancy Board which is 
made up of three members appointed by the Province of BC, two members elected from Islands Trust Council, and one 
member appointed by the Islands Trust Executive Committee. 
 
The trustees will be sworn in at a ceremony on Thursday, November 17, 2022 in Victoria. The inaugural Islands Trust 
Council meeting on November 18 -19 in Victoria will be focused on orientation and elections to committees/Islands Trust 
Conservancy positions. The meeting agenda will be posted in early November.
