RE: Enhance Islands Trust’s Jurisdiction Over Tree Cutting  
 
Congratulations on your recent election success and appointment as Minister of Municipal Affairs. 
The Islands Trust Council is looking forward to working with you over the next four years to advance 
protection of the Islands Trust Area. I am writing to advise you that during its September 15-16, 2020 
meeting, the Islands Trust Council passed the following motion: 
 
That Islands Trust request the Province enhance the Trust’s jurisdiction over tree cutting bylaws to 
make its jurisdiction equal to that of municipalities under section 8 of the Community Charter. 
 
The protection of sensitive forest ecosystems is a top priority for Islands Trust and a cornerstone of 
our 2018-2022 Strategic Plan. In addition to this request for additional local trust committee powers, 
we want you to know that we are still requesting that the Province change legislation so that local 
trust committees could regulate, but not prohibit, forest activities on Private Managed Forest Lands 
within the Islands Trust Area. 
 
In March 2019, Islands Trust Council joined First Nations and governments around the world in 
declaring a Climate Emergency, calling for an urgent response to the threats and costs posed by 
climate change. Proper management and protection of forest ecosystems and green carbon sinks in 
the Trust Area will be critical to the Trust’s climate mitigation and adaptation efforts.
