The Islands Trust Council is looking forward to working with you over the next four years to advance protection of the Islands Trust Area. I am writing to advise you that during its September 15-16, 2020 meeting, following a joint presentation by Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society and West Coast Environmental Law, the Islands Trust Council passed the following motion: THAT Trust Council direct the Chair to write to the Premier and all relevant Ministers of the BC government on behalf of Trust Council to request that the BC Government develop and enact a Coastal Strategy and law to leverage and coordinate the work of provincial ministries, First Nations, local communities, and stakeholder groups to preserve coastal and ocean health, halt coastal habitat loss, accelerate the completion of a network of marine protected areas to benefit fisheries, biodiversity and the economy, set marine environmental quality objectives from upland activities, and help communities adopt ecosystem-based approaches to manage risks from flooding due to extreme weather events, sea level rise, climate change, and ocean acidification. As we make efforts to mitigate and adapt to the current climate emergency, this form of coordinated and strategic approach will be critical to the preservation of lands and waters in the region and to our long-term climate resilience. Premier and Ministers November 30, 2020 Page 2 Thank you for considering this request. Yours sincerely, Peter Luckham Chair, Islands Trust Council pluckham@islandstrust.bc.ca cc: Parlia
