This strategy will advance Goal #4 from the Island Trust Council’s Strategic Plan: to protect the quality and quantity of water resources. The strategy will include principles and actions to guide Islands Trust in their activities and influence partner government non-governmental agencies. Actions may include adopting new regulatory tools, public education and communication, enhancing science or data gathering and monitoring, or advocating with other levels of government. The process of developing the Freshwater Sustainability Strategy consists of: • interviews with key stakeholders to gather ideas and understand constraints, • a literature review to identify the policy context, • two workshops with Islands Trust staff to identify goals and implementation considerations, • a series of virtual workshops with a diverse stakeholder group between March and May, and • a workshop with Trustees through the Regional Planning Committee in May. The flow diagram on the next page graphically illustrates the project methodology. This project is supported by Econics and Compass Resource Management, two firms with specialization in water management and stakeholder engagement.
